This visualization of crime data has been developed by Gianluca Correndo within the EnAKTing project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council under contract EP/G008493/1.

The application uses heatmap.js library to generate online the heatmaps. The maps are rendered using OpenLayer API with OpenStreetMap tiles (data distributed under CC-BY-SA license).

The reports of crimes are published monthly by the UK police via their portal http://police.uk, and made available under the Open Government License.

The location of schools within England and Wales has been provided by the Department for Education in the Edubase data set, while the locations of bus stops and railway stations have been published in the NAPTAN data set by the Department for Transport. Both data sets have been made available under the Open Government License.

Using this application you will be able to see on a map the reported crime or ASBOs in any area during a given month. Simply enter a postcode and hit enter in the menu Location.

Please, note that crime data is anonymised and made more general geographically - therefore a hotspot over a particular place does not indicate that a crime occurred at this place, rather that is was recorded as occurring somewhere nearby.

Initially only ASBOs are displayed but you can choose which kind of crime to view by clicking on the Crime type menu.

You can also change the reported month by using the Time period menu.

The schools and bus stops/train station are also shown on the map. If you want to disable them access the layer menu using + on the upper right corner of the map.
